Building the future

What building the future told us in the first day?

So yesterday, Bruce Dickinson walked onto a stage at the Pavilhão Carlos Lopes in Lisbon to talk about AI. Yes, that Bruce Dickinson. The Iron Maiden guy. And it was kind of great.

That pretty much sets the tone for what Building the Future 2026 was going for this year. The conference is now on its eighth edition, and the organizers are done with the "AI is coming" conversation. Their theme this time was "AI: From Adoption to Advantage." In plain terms: most companies already use AI in some way. The real question is whether it's actually making them money or just giving the IT department something new to play with.

Bruce Dickinson Was the Headliner (Of Course)

Microsoft sponsored his session, and Dickinson talked about how tech is changing music, from the way songs get written to how they end up on stage. His big point was simple: tools are tools. They make creative people better. They don't replace them.

The part that got people really going was when he started talking about leadership. He's been running one of the biggest bands in the world for over 40 years, dealing with a music industry that reinvents itself every five minutes, making big calls in front of massive crowds. A lot of the CEOs and founders in the room seemed to connect with that more than with any AI demo.

What Else Happened

The rest of Day 1 had a clear direction. Sessions were built for people who already have AI in their company and need to figure out if it's doing anything useful. We're past the "should we use it?" stage. The talks focused on things like productivity gains, where AI gives you an edge over competitors, and how to measure whether any of this stuff is worth the investment.

Bernardo Correia, Portugal's Secretary of State for Digitalization, also showed up. Portugal keeps trying to build its reputation as a tech destination, and BTF is one of the events that actually backs that up.
